âYouâre gardening in that?â Micah glanced down at his faded jeans and old T-shirt then back at the form-fitting dark-wash jeans and designer T-shirt Serena wore. âI mean, you look amazing, but you know weâre going to get dirty. Right?â
Serena sighed. âYes, I know. But I canât wear my potting clothes out in public. I just canât. These wash.â
He shrugged. It wasnât a big deal to him, either way, but she was probably going to be annoyed if she ended up grubby. Sheâd worn work clothes to the bakery when she wanted to show off her design for the plates. Apparently that was a different situation. âOkay. You ready?â
âYeah. I know you think itâs stupid.â
âNo. I donât. Maybe I donât understand, but I donât think itâs stupid. As long as you know youâre going to get dirt all over you, and are good with it, then Iâm set.â He held out his hand.
She wound her fingers through his and tugged, pulling him to her. She lifted her face and pressed her lips to his. âOr we could stay here and find something else to do.â
âUm.â Micahâs heart raced off like someone had fired a starting pistol.
âThat came out wrong.â Serena stepped back, her cheeks pink. She cleared her throat. âSo we should go ahead and go.â
He nodded. His throat was dry. And the pictures that flashed through his mindâa combination of his vivid imagination and photos that had been included in online reports about her wild daysâwere definitely not where his thoughts should be. âThatâs a good plan.â
In the car, Micah glanced over. âHave fun with Gloria last night?â
âI really did. Itâs rare for her to get a Friday night off and not be too tired to hang out. Thanks for understanding.â
âMy brothers appreciated a chance to trounce me at their latest video gameâso that was fun.â
Serena laughed. âWhat game?â
âNo clue. There were zombies in a beach resort. I thought we were all fighting together to find a cure or something, but they managed to turn it into a competition to see who could slay the most of each type.â He shook his head. âStill fun, though.â
âSounds like it.â
âHa. I hear your skepticism. And thatâs okay. Itâs not for everyone. I bailed around nine anyway so I could read. Managed to finish the thriller I picked up for free the other day.â
âYeah? How was it?â
âEh. Not terrible, but not the best Iâve ever read.â Micah grinned. âBut I canât complain about the price, so I wonât say anything bad about it. Do you like to read?â
âSure. Maybe not as much as you, but I get through around twenty books a year. Maybe a few more. Iâm more of a romance gal.â
âFigures. Talk to Ruth sometime, sheâll hook you up. She has this major thing for Christian romanceâlots of authors to choose from.â He turned into the parking lot at the church. âI thought weâd park here and walk over. Iâm not sure what the parkingâs like over there on a Saturday.
